Curriculum development for an interprofessional further education course
Interaction with people with a refugee- or migrant experience and symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in acute care.Refugee and migrant experiences can be connected with traumatic episodes, which can lead to a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As this illness is often not the focus of acute care admissions, PTSD symptoms are easily overlooked in daily hospital life. As a result, complex or difficult situations can develop or the affected person can receive inadequate care. An interprofessional team is necessary here to better recognise, avoid or manage such situations collaboratively. A basic knowledge of PTSD, interprofessional collaboration and culturally sensitive management is helpful.
Project description
Between September 1st, 2017 and December 31st, 2019, an interprofessional further education programme focusing on interaction with people with a refugee and migration experience and PTSD symptoms was developed, implemented and evaluated in cooperation with the University Hospital, Freiburg and the University Hospital, Cologne in a pilot project.
This project was support by the Robert Bosch Foundation in the context of the programme Operation Team- Interprofessional training in the health professions.
A research publication of the project results is being developed and will provisionally appear in 2020.
The further education programme is now offered once a year by the Institute for Nursing Science at the University of Freiburg. Information regarding the training and registration requirements can be found here.
