Inhalt | Through research, sustainability science addresses problems that pose urgent threats to planetary health such as climate change or epidemics. It investigates technologies, business practices, policies, and other means to mitigate these threats in a timely manner and create positive outcomes simultaneously for society, environment, and economy. Through education, sustainability science trains people in problem-solving skills. Solution-oriented sustainability learning (SOS-learning) creates real-world learning situations in which students contribute directly to sustainability solutions in cities, businesses, or government organizations. This approach also includes training in professional skills such as teamwork and stakeholder engagement. Instructors often serve as coaches and facilitators in students’ self-directed learning journeys. In this session, we briefly outline the concept of sustainability and then present SOS-learning for students interested in becoming change agents and problem solvers for sustainability in industry, government or the non-profit sector. We present examples from SOS-learning on bachelor, master and doctoral levels. Finally, we discuss how to institutionalize SOS-learning across university programs. |
