Dear colleagues,

with great pleasure we invite you to the international “Farewell” symposium of Prof. Dieter Riemann, which will take place on April,11, 2025. Dieter Riemann retired officially from his duties at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of Freiburg University Medical Center on March, 31, after more than 30 years as a University Professor and Department Head of Clinical Psychology and Psychophysiology.

Dieter Riemann joined the Max-Planck Institute for Psychiatry as a student researcher from 1979 till 1985. He developed a keen interest in biological psychiatry, psychotherapy and sleep research. After a one year research stipend he joined the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim as a scientific assistant, received his PhD from the University of Konstanz in 1988 and his habilitation in Clinical Psychology from the University of Heidelberg in 1992. On July 1, 1993 he joined the Department of Psychiatry at Freiburg University Medical Center with a tenured professorship. Clinically he worked as a psychological psychotherapist and a supervisor for psychotherapy, mainly focussing on patients with all kinds of sleep disorders. His scientific output includes more than 500 publications. His contributions led to the Pisa sleep award in 2021 and just recently he was nominated by Clarivate/ Web of Science as one of the most highly cited researchers in his field.

With his retirement he took over the function of a speaker of the Germans Sleep Society and still is editor in chief of the Journal of Sleep Research, one of the most important outlets for the publication of sleep research and sleep medicine.

We do wish him good health for the future and like to thank him for his work in Freiburg and what he achieved not only for himself but also for the Department. It was and is a real pleasure to work with him!

Katharina Domschke and Mathias Berger (Freiburg)

Dear friends and colleagues,

first of all let me thank Freiburg University Medical Center and Katharina Domschke and Mathias Berger for encouraging and supporting me to organise this event. It is really a major highlight for me to end my official time at Freiburg University with the possibility to invite close friends from my scientific community and former colleagues from Freiburg, to whom I am endlessly grateful for having had the chance to work with them over the last decades. A great thanks also goes to the sponsors.

Mathias Berger was my clinical and scientific mentor from 1979 till 2016 and I want to express my deep gratitude for all the opportunities he opened up for me and the lively atmosphere at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy he created. Where would I be without him? Katharina Domschke took over the Department at the end of 2016 and she provided a smooth transition which allowed me pursue my clinical and scientific interests at full speed – indeed I am extremely thankful for all the support she gave me!

I am looking forward to see many of you in person on April 11, 2025, but as seats are limited, we have made it possible to stream the event online. For this I am thanking the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) and the German Sleep Society (DGSM) who officially endorse this event.

Dieter Riemann (Freiburg)
