Center for Deep Brain Stimulation
About the Center for Deep Brain Stimulation
The Center for Deep Brain Stimulation is a virtual platform and serves to bring together interested members from the medical department of the University of Freiburg as well as explicitly external institutions and is organized as a non-legal association.
The aim of this center is to gain higher visibility for the research of new brain stimulation methods for psychiatric and neurological diseases.
A further aim is to promote the exchange and scientific corporations between the members of this center and strengthen collaborations in the field of translational medical research. This applies to both clinical and basic research.
An overview of how we want to implement these goals can be found under Tasks and Goals.
Current Events

The 2nd Psychiatric Surgery Summit takes place in Freiburg (GER) from 24th to 26th of October 2024.
Experts in the field of Deep Brain Stimulation in psychiatric indications will meet for two and a half days of intense and in depth discussion about this burgeoning field.

The members of the Center for Deep Brain Stimulation come from different faculties and disciplines. In the future, we would like to use this assured broad-based expertise in the following way:
-
develop innovative therapy concepts in a basic scientific and translational manner
-
develop scientific bases for the definition of therapy resistance in various diseases (e.g. epilepsies, major depression, obessive-compulsive-disorder, dementias, eating disorders, etc.)
-
estabilish national and international guidelines
-
determine the need for invasive stimulation methods (Germany, EU, worldwide)
-
initiate discussions with psychiatric colleges and exchange information
-
advise and support projects and groups with regard to ethical issues
-
advise political bodies in terms of informed public governance
-
estabilish a further education curriculum for medical residents of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry on topics of deep brain stimulation
-
organize an annual conference on deep brain stimulation
-
intensify public awareness about the possibilities of deep brain stimulation in neurological and psychiatric diseases.
