Experimental Radiology

At Experimental Radiology we are developing novel MRI technologies for various diagnostic and therapeutic applications in radiology, cardiology, radiation therapy, and other clinical fields.

For MRI-guided interventions rapid image acquisition methods are investigated to perform real-time imaging during the intervention. Dedicated devices such as catheters, needles and robotic assistance systems are studied so that minimally invasive interventional procedures can be performed safely and efficiently in the limited space of an MRI magnet.

In functional high-field MRI we develop dedicated radio-frequency (RF) coils for non-proton MRI (i.e., MRI with nuclei such as 19F, 13C, or 17O) in our own RF laboratory. With these coils in combination with optimized image acquisition methods tissue inflammation and oxygenation as well as tumor metabolism can be investigated, but the methods are also used to study myelin content in the brain.

Finally, advanced imaging concepts are explored such as a purely optical RF coil design (“light coils”), ultra-fast MRI of the larynx to investigate the vocal fold dynamics during singing, or the application of artificial intelligence in oncologic MRI.
