Dear colleagues,

The advances in extracorporeal circulatory and lung support in recent years are impressive. On the one hand, it has been possible to continually improve the existing procedures and methods, so that the safety in the application has increased significantly and the range of possible therapies has been expanded considerably. Procedures that benefited a few patients only at highly specialized centers some years ago have found their way into clinical routine and many patients have benefited. Meanwhile, it is possible to stabilize a patient, if necessary, at least temporarily almost anywhere with an extracorporeal device, and thus to enable safe transport to a specialized center.

But not only the technical advancements and broad availability of the procedures are decisive. Equally important it is that we know the different options and that we are experienced in the choice of options and application. The implantation, therapy control and weaning of patients from these highly invasive procedures require a sound knowledge, a lot of experience and manual skills and are only possible in well-established multidisciplinary teams.

At the 1st Freiburg Symposium on Extracorporeal Life Support we want to give you a state-of-the-art overview of current treatment options, we want to talk with experts about their experience in specific situations and we want to present and discuss most recent research data and to give an outlook on future developments.

A dedicated poster session will stimulate scientific discussions and we invite you to submit your latest research in the field of extracorporeal life support. A poster prize will be awarded at the end of the poster session (FELS Poster Award, 500,00 Euros, sponsored by CytoSorbents). Finally, hands-on training together with specialists in small groups will be possible in different FELS workshops.

We invite you to an exciting symposium with international speakers and we look forward to welcoming you to Freiburg.
