The Institute of Medical Biometry and Statistics (IMBI) at the University of Freiburg is developing methods for artificial intelligence and modeling to discover complex patterns in data, in particular encountered in biomedicine. This requires a highly interdisciplinary approach which combines expertise from computer science, mathematics, statistics/systems modeling, and biomedicine. Thus, projects at the IMBI need to be organized to incorporate contributions from many protagonists in a structured goal-driven manner. An example for this is a major international data science conference that we are organizing for 2026, combining efforts from both a national and an international data science society. Scientific Project and Conference Manager (m/f/d)

starting June 1st, 2025, or later.

Your Tasks:
  • lead the planning and organization of highly interdisciplinary projects, and in particular of a large-scale data science conference in 2026, in collaboration with both a national and an international data science society, including coordination of the conference team, and the support of an agency for conference organization
  • develop comprehensive project plans, including timelines, resource allocation, and risk management strategies
  • serve as the primary point of contact, ensure effective communication and coordination throughout the planning process
  • develop and implement marketing strategies to promote activities to a global audience
  • coordinate the creation of promotional materials
  • oversee logistical aspects
  • lead evaluation processes, gathering feedback, analyzing outcomes, and preparing final reports
Your Qualifications:
  • substantial project management experience, e.g. in research projects or academic conferences, particularly in the field of data science or biomedical research
  • experience in leading a team or other group utilizing effective communication, and interpersonal skills
  • excellent organizational skills with experience using tools and platforms for event management
  • ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural team
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills also in English
  • experience in marketing
This position is full-time (with an option for part-time), with a fixed-term contract initially until June 2027, with the possibility of extension. Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the regulations for German state employees and according to your qualification level (up to TV-L).
