The Department of Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology at the Freiburg University Hospital, Germany, offers in the research group of Dr. Dr. Anke Schumann a

PhD Position Molecular Nephrology (m/f/d)

The group focusses on pathomechanisms driving kidney disease in Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) of different origin.

The project is part of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center 1453 (Nephrogenetics (NephGen)): “Hereditary lysosomal storage and metabolic diseases in the kidney”.

Within this project, we aim to perform a comprehensive phenotypic characterization of patient derived renal cells, kidney organoids and animal models in Fabry’s disease and methylmalonic aciduria. In depth metabolic profiling and precise mapping will be applied to identify disrupted organelle signalling. Our final goal is the identification of novel biomarkers and pharmacologically targetable aims. The project includes generation of model systems using gene editing as well as multi-omics analyses and advanced imaging techniques. The translational potential will be evaluated in long-standing patient cohorts.

What we offer:

  • a modern, well-equipped laboratory and use of the latest techniques in the core facilities of the university and the university hospital
  • a friendly working atmosphere in a very collegial, committed team
  • a translational, highly collaborative project within an international research consortium, also offering unique opportunities to perform highly specialised experiments in partner laboratories
  • a wide range of professional and personal development opportunities thanks to the structured, excellent experimental and theoretical research training of doctoral candidates at the Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine and the networks of the Collaborative Research Center
  • a high degree of independence in various tasks
  • salary group TV-L/E13

Candidate Profile:

  • very good Master's thesis in biology, molecular medicine, biochemistry or pharmacy
  • ability to work independently and in a structured manner
  • high willingness to learn new methods
  • strong interest in deciphering disease mechanisms and passion for translational research
  • Commitment and team spirit
