DKTK

School of Oncology (SoO)
Training in Translational Oncology for Physicians and Scientists

Physicians and scientists traditionally follow two separate qualification paths, but in translational research they work side by side. The German Cancer Consortium, DKTK has created the first opportunity in Germany for people of both disciplines to specialize in translational oncology. The School of Oncology gives scientists and physicians at the start of their careers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the requirements of clinical trials, approval processes and the concept of networked, multicenter, interdisciplinary research.

Goals

  • Exchange of medical and clinician scientists.
  • Establishment of structured training in translational cancer research.
  • Establishment of an interactive nationwide network in DKTK.
  • Support of your scientific career development.

Opportunities

As SoO fellows, you can receive support from DKTK School of Oncology for visiting conferences and Summer Schools.

Read some of their impressions here:

Rhena Klar, DKFZ Summer School 2023 Organoids in Next Generation Cancer Research:

"I was more than honored to be selected to give a short talk at this amazing Summer School taking place at the DKFZ in Heidelberg, where more than 100 people gathered to discuss topics related to modeling basic cancer mechanisms with organoids, including next innovations and co-culture systems, as well as clinical translation. Thanks to the "Promoting Young Talents" funding from DKTK Freiburg, I was able to speak about my project "Personalized drug testing on patient-derived organoids (PDOs) as an extended arm of the Molecular Tumor Board" in the clinical translation session of the Summer School. The keynote lectures were amazing and the opportunity to network with so many great scientists was fantastic. I really enjoyed this great opportunity!"

Avantika Ghosh, German Cancer Research Congress 2023:

"I attended the 3rd German Cancer Research Congress in Heidelberg. The congress showcased the excellent ongoing research in the field of cancer, with a wide range of topics from precision diagnostics to personalised immunotherapy. For me, as a molecular biologist working on cancer genomics, the most interesting part about attending the congress was the opportunity to learn about the translational and clinical side of cancer research. Along with the talks, the encouraging feedback on my poster and the chance to network with fellow scientists was very valuable. I am grateful to the DKTK School of Oncology for generously supporting and sponsoring my participation in this conference."

Fellowship Period

A SoO fellowship lasts for a maximum of 3 years, independent from the achievement/conclusion of a DKTK SoO certificate. Extension of time is possible in case of maternity leave or temporary stay abroad.
